One of three state halfway houses operated by the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, Discovery House offers a co-ed placement option for juveniles between the ages of 16 and 20, who have been committed to the department and are in direct care or parole status.
While at Discovery House, residents are assisted with preparation for independent living in the community. Supervision and guidance are provided while residents are held accountable for their behavior and provided with the opportunity to become productive members of society. The program is an objective-oriented, phase movement program with an average length of placement of four to six months that includes three residential phases and one outreach phase. Privileges and freedom are earned incrementally by the demonstration of responsible behavior, self-control, and task achievement.
Discovery House strives to offer a stable, secure, and personally non-threatening environment, in which residents can learn and practice skills necessary to live useful, law-abiding lives in the community.
