Community Placement Programs

Goal: The placement of juveniles committed to the Department into a smaller, more treatment focused facility to enhance a more positive reintegration of the juveniles into their communities and reduce the likelihood of recidivating.

The Community Placement Program is a contractual agreement between the DJJ and two locally-owned juvenile detention centers.

In both programs, ten males, ages 14-17, are housed on a separate unit with dedicated, specially-trained staff and Program Case Manager.

Program Philosophy:

Education Services:

The two facilities and their program components:

Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center (SVJC) is a state-of-the-art juvenile detention facility located in the Augusta County Government Complex in Staunton, Virginia.  The new thirty-two thousand square foot building incorporates geothermal heating and cooling as well as other environmentally friendly features including a heavy reliance on natural lighting.  The fifty-five bed juvenile detention facility opened in September of 2003 and serves seven jurisdictions.  The DJJ began the CPP contract in April of 2004.

Program/Treatment Components:

Chesapeake Juvenile Services is a 100-bed pre-dispositional and post-dispositional detention facility located in the City of Chesapeake’s municipal government complex.  Through a competitive Request for Proposal process, the Department of Juvenile Justice contracted with them to begin accepting juveniles in December of 2004.
