DJJ Partnership is one of the efforts of the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to increase the awareness of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia of the people and programs that makeup DJJ.

DJJ Partnership will tell you some of the stories and accomplishments that make this agency one of the national leaders in providing juvenile justice services.

April 20, 2007 - Declared a Statewide Day of Mourning by Governor Kaine

RICHMOND – Governor Timothy M. Kaine has declared Friday, April 20, 2007 a statewide day of mourning for the victims of Monday’s tragedy at Virginia Tech.

On Friday, Governor Kaine will participate in an interfaith prayer service in Monroe Park on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He has encouraged other communities in Virginia and across the nation to hold their own simultaneous ceremonies and participate in prayer services, beginning with the ringing of bells at noon, eastern daylight savings time.

“As our Commonwealth begins the long and difficult healing process, I am filled with images of a Virginia Tech community that is resilient and unified,” said Governor Kaine. “I ask that everyone in Virginia pause at noon on Friday to offer prayers of support for the victims, their families, and for all those affected by this tragedy.”

The Richmond prayer service will take place at Monroe Park, Belvidere and Main Streets, and will begin at noon, eastern daylight savings time.

On March 2, 2007, Governor Tim Kaine met with key segments of the public safety community at Virginia State Police Headquarters to discuss efforts made by his administration and the General Assembly during the 2007 session to enhance public safety throughout the Commonwealth.  This enhancement was highlighted by the passage of 12 bills and over $13.6 million in budget amendments

Governor Kaine thanked legislative sponsors for their diligent efforts in advancing these ideas and he outlined his budget and legislative package which included successful measures to:

-Enhance survivor benefits for spouses and dependents of military service members, National Guardsmen and the Virginia State Defense Force;

-Provide additional employment protections for National Guardsmen serving on state duty;

-Improve the Commonwealth’s emergency preparedness effort by modernizing the mission of the National Guard and strengthening local emergency preparedness;

-Transfer the State Fire Marshal’s Office to the Department of Fire Programs under the Public Safety Secretariat;

-Enhance law enforcement compensation and retirement benefits for state troopers, deputy sheriffs and juvenile and adult correctional officers; and,

-Allocate funds to the Virginia Crime-Victim Witness Fund.
