Office of the Inspector General
The Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Juvenile Justice was established in February 2000, in accordance with the Code of Virginia §66-3.1. The mission is to protect and preserve the integrity of the Department of Juvenile Justice by preventing or detecting and exposing criminal activity, waste, abuse, corruption, serious misconduct or mismanagement that relates in any way to DJJ operations or personnel. This Office acts as the middle person and a fact-finding agent.
Units Under the Office of Inspector General:
- IG Investigators/Certification Analyst;
- Certification Unit;
- Internal Auditor;
- Ombudsman Program.
Corrections Investigators and Certification analysts:
- Conduct interviews and interrogations;
- Take written and sworn statements;
- Prepare official reports of findings;
- Testify at court proceedings;
- Preserve materials for court;
- Collaborate with state police and other agencies;
- Conduct official certification audits and monitor compliance of DJJ's correctional facilities;
- Routinely make system of procedural recommendations.
Types of Cases:
- Assaults/Staff on Ward, Ward on Staff, Ward on Ward;
- Child abuse and neglect (investigated with Child Protective Services);
- Theft of state property (investigated with State Police);
- Criminal acts inside of facilities(investigated with State Police).
