Residential Programs

Remotely located in southwestern Virginia in Grundy, the Virginia Wilderness Institute (VWI) is a 32 bed facility that serves committed offenders and is operated by Associated Marine Institute. This highly structured, disciplined, residential program for males focuses on accountability and competency. Offering a full range of academic and vocational instruction, VWI emphasizes work ethics, education, self-discipline, responsibility, and accountability through participation in a rigorous daily work structure. A community coordinator works with each ward during the ward's incarceration and after release from the facility to assist in the transition to community living. Transition activities include assistance with job searches, school re-enrollment, and locating community support services.
