December 18, 2006 - Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center Supports the Battery Park Community
During this holiday season, Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center continued their spirit of giving to the community. Through the Richmond Department of Social Services, Bon Air JCC participated in the Adopt-A-Family Program to assist one of the many families of Battery Park that was affected by the flooding as a result of tropical storm Ernesto.
In December staff joined together to decorate a “Wish Tree”. The wishes of the adopted family were inscribed on paper cutouts of presents. The wishes of the adopted family, single mom, 8-year-old girl, and 2-year-old twins, a girl and boy, were minimal. When the inscribed wishes were all taken from the tree, staff continued to give money and presents for the family. “With the financial impact facing this family and the fact that they are still dealing with the cost of cleanup, our goal was to provide some relief and give the gift of joy of the Christmas season,” said Superintendent L.S. McWilliams. “I am deeply pleased that the staff wanted to reach out to this devastated community.”
At Bon Air JCC’s annual Service Award Luncheon held on December 14, 2006, the adopted family was present to receive their fulfilled wishes. A monetary donation of $210.00 and more than 75 wrapped gifts worth over $1,500 were presented to the family. The gifts included household items such as dishes, pots and pans, silverware, a blender, bed linens, keepsake hand-painted ornaments; and lots of toys such as a bicycle, family games, movies, a train set, dolls, books, and clothes. In attendance at the presentation were The Honorable Clyde Cristman, Deputy Secretary of Public Safety, Barry Green, Director, and E.W. Murray, Deputy Director of the Department of Juvenile Justice, administrators and approximately 170 facility staff. Santa was on hand to help present the gifts to the family.
Earlier this year, Superintendent McWilliams along with seventeen members of the Bon Air staff volunteered their time to assist with organizing donations from the community at Norrell Elementary School, Headquarters of the Battery Park Relief Effort. A donation of new household goods, such as small appliances, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, and linens worth $700.00 was made at that time. This donation included $500.00 from Bon Air’s Staff Fund and at the institution’s request, Wal-Mart provided a cash donation in the amount of $200.00.

December 13, 2006 - Agency Strategic Plan
On December 6, 2006, DJJ Director Barry R. Green shared the agency's new Strategic Plan with DJJ's employees. As Director Green writes,
" Over the past six months, a workgroup, made up of various representatives from across our organizational structure, and including a member of the Department of Correctional Education, has been developing a new Strategic Plan. Our agency already has much to be proud of. The new plan builds on what we have already accomplished in our work with Virginia’s youth, families and communities. The new Strategic Plan lays out a vision for moving forward by redefining and improving outcomes. Our hope is that we will continue to improve our standing as an organization where all employees are valued and challenged to grow and better unite the efforts of our juvenile correctional centers, court service units, halfway houses, central office and many other local, state and nonprofit partners."

DJJ Knowledge Center - Learning Management System (LMS)
July 25, 2006 - Update
The much anticipated Knowledge Center (LMS) will be opening in the next several days in two stages. To prepare for employees who will be using the system to enroll in classes, we want to first allow access to administrators, managers and supervisors. A few days later, when they have had the opportunity to register, we will allow access to everyone. For those who have registered in the practice/stage site, you will need to repeat the registration process.
Two resource manuals are available for this system and are on DJJ's Web Site . The first is a smaller DJJ User's Guide and the second is a User's Guide from Meridian. The DJJ Guide will be more helpful when registering in the system, but the Meridian Guide will explain the functions of the system in more detail.
Look forward to adding more resource material and courses to this system over the next six months. As major updates occur, we will keep you informed via email, but we also want to remind you to visit the "What's New" section in LMS (on the blue tool bar) each time you login.
Thank you for your continued support of the Knowledge Center.
